Mt. Tam Canvas Workers is an educational 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose purpose is to support the education and cultural development, and interest in the art of needlepoint. It is the Marin County Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild and was founded in 2001 by Louise Rapoport, a Novato resident. The Chapter currently has 50 members.
Chapter membership offers a forum for participation and fellowship on the local level through monthly programs and instruction in the field of needlepoint, including lectures, demonstrations, and stitching and finishing projects. Twice a year the Chapter sponsors two- or three-day workshops featuring national teachers. Members are in the process of stitching a tapestry for donation to the community, and have initiated a program teaching needlepoint in the local elementary schools.
Fund
raising includes an annual auction of needlework-related items at the local
level. The most ambitious fund raising effort has been the writing and
production of a 75-page stitch guide based on the Chapter’s donation to the
American Needlepoint Guild’s auction at
its 2004 national seminar, Hats Off to Halloween that
raised $16,000 for ANG’s educational efforts. Proceeds of the stitch
guide will support the educational and cultural purposes of Mt. Tam Canvas
Workers.
Membership is open to anyone interested in needlepoint. The Chapter meets the third Saturday of every month, except July, August, and December. Meetings are held at the offices of the Marin Community Foundation, Hanger 5, Hamilton Field, Novato. Membership information and an order form for the stitch guide are available by clicking on the preceding links or by contacting the Chapter at P. O. Box 174, Corte Madera, CA 94976.
